22nd November 2016

Help refugees Charity in Calais.

Calais and the refugee crisis have occupied our media considerably over the last year.  I am never sure whether the media tells the whole story, so I decided to go and see for myself.

Help Refugees Charity worker volunteering in the kitchen.

Help Refugees Charity worker volunteering in the kitchen.

Accompanied by a young documentary crew, we set off to visit Help Refugees, http://www.helprefugees.org.uk. This is a charity of up to 300 volunteers offering support to the 13,000 refugees living in ‘The Jungle’ as well as other camps across France.
We arrived around 11am on the 6th of November 2016, just days after ‘The Jungle’ was closed down and the refugees were relocated.
With two cars full of crew and charitable donations, we soon started chatting with the volunteers and were welcomed onto the site.
The huge warehouse is currently run by 60 remaining staff since the closure of ‘The Jungle’ and is still offering support to the nearby camp in Dunblane.
The mountains of clothing, tents and food etc. showed the sheer scale of the support these refugee’s have received in donations, mostly from the UK. It was unbelievable. The volunteers worked flat out, sorting through the donations and cooking up to 3000 meals a day for the refugees. They definitely had their work cut out. The magnitude of the volunteer’s dedication, positive attitude, teamwork and selflessness made this a magical experience.
The volunteers came from various backgrounds. Whether you worked in the city of London or lived in a campervan all your life, this was irrelevant. They were all there for one purpose, to help the people who needed it.
On my way home, I couldn’t stop thinking “this could happen to any one of us”.
Please have a look at my case study to see a full set of images from Help Refugees.
