Case studies - Getty Images: Ballet
< Back to Case Studies
Sometimes, one of the most important aspects of a photographer's work is to achieve an unposed, natural feel.
We specialise in this.
Take these images, for example, shot at a ballet class in an impoverished area of the UK. They illustrate learning and enjoyment, as you'd expect, but they also represent aspiration. We didn't hire models for this shoot. We've photographed real ballet pupils with their real teacher in their real environment, and created our images around their ways of working. As you can see, this is a rewarding approach, giving us far more realistic images than we might have produced by posing our subjects.
We also managed to capture a flavour of the atmosphere with some evocative images of the pupils at rest, enjoying a little bit of conversation and camaraderie. One of the most striking aspects of the images, however, is the sense of professionalism apparent in the pupils' efforts. It's clear to see that they're taking their work - and their instructor's directions - seriously. So the strength of these images lies in a combination of our shooting style, our ability to allow our subjects to relax and our subjects' skill.
We've found that this set of images has proven quite popular. Some of them have been featured in Getty Images' blog,
Peer
, while others have received honourable mentions in the
2014 International Photography Awards
. We're delighted with these little bits of recognition.
