Case studies - Foolproof - 'New Behaviours'

< Back to Case Studies
Operating a mobile phone. Using a mobile phone while skateboarding. Recording a gig on a mobile phone. Recording data from a run. Using a mobile phone on a train. Touching a wallet to access a building. Cupping hand over mouth while talking on mobile phone. Covering keypad at an ATM with hands. Making a video recording of skateboarding using a mobile phone. Recording data from a run. Holding tablet device to face. Playing a video game on a laptop. Checking in via a mobile phone at an airport.
For this project, we collaborated with design company Foolproof to document the development of new behaviours as people adapt to advances in technology. Among the ideas was to illustrate the fact that these behaviours are ubiquitous, affecting different generations as well as different cultures, and altering how we go about tasks as diverse as checking into airports and recording data from exercise routines. We also wanted to highlight the increasing presence of new forms of communication, such as video calling, and the ever more common sight of people using tablet devices.

These images are, over time, being uploaded to a dedicated – and very distinctive - Instagram feed. They are designed as unstaged, raw photographs, although they also have a fresh and contemporary edge and the technical finesse you'd expect from us. The niche element of this project helps the Instagram feed to stand out from others – it isn't common to see an entire account dedicated to one concept. So we're developing a bit of a following.

This is an intriguing ongoing project, designed to take developing behaviours of the future into account, contributing to a wider picture of the paths that people have taken as the years pass and as technology influences all of our lives in new and different ways. It'll be interesting, as time passes, to see how our behaviours have changed, which ones have become obsolete and which have remained with us. Keep an eye on it.
